Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy
4.1 / 5.0
Common Game

This mobile game is something of an oddity. It's a rock climbing game that manages to be as straightforward as it is frustrating.

In many ways, it is the deliberately flawed work of a gaming genius who set out to annoy people. And by most measures, they have succeeded by some margin.

It is a feat of endurance, patience, and almost continual setback. The genius element is the fact the game involves just one tool; a hammer. So, on the surface, it doesn't appear to be particularly challenging. Until you start this is, and then you discover quite how fiendishly awful it is.

Indeed the features as listed by the developer pretty much sets out the stall for the game.

More

If you were under the illusion that Canadians are lovely people, this game might cause you to reconsider.

The Saskatchewan-based developer, Bennett Foddy's Noodlecake Studios, has a devilish streak to them.

They trick you with their game's superficial simplicity. Until you realize just how much of an uphill (pun intended) task you are undertaking.

You move the hammer, and eventually, you master jumping, swinging, climbing, and flying. However, by this time, you have reached the point of no return. You have to press onto the summit as there's no way to save your game.

This can be problematic as it can take anything between two to five hours or more to get to the summit. So you have to set aside serious chunks of time if you are going to reach the top in one sitting.

And, as if that isn't bad enough, there's audio of Bennett Foddy regularly pitching with his philosophical observations on your problem at hand. Just what you need halfway up a rock face, a Canadian climbing Yoda offering mystical insights.

All of this is aimed at a particular type of person -- presumably, people with Zen-like levels of patience and the ability to endure frustration of masochistic proportions.

However, the biggest bugbear by far with this mobile game is the controls. It was ported over from the PC and not terribly well. The controls are tricky at best and next to impossible at worst. This has led some to wonder if you can complete the game without pulling all your hair out in the process.
