Subway Surfers
4.4 / 5.0
Common Game

Somewhat disappointingly, this mobile game has nothing to do with bread or overstuffed sandwiches.

Instead, this game is focused on surfing the subway, the public transportation option. And right on time for the Olympics, the latest update is set in Tokyo.

The basic premise is straightforward enough you ensure Jake, Fresh and Tricky evade the grumpy Ticket Inspector and his sidekick dog.

The Inspector is after you because you are dodging oncoming trains on your hoverboard while collecting coins. (Do not under any circumstances try this for real, A) it's illegal, and B) you will wind up very dead.)

More

If the idea of flirting with imminent and messy death appeals to you, then you will almost certainly love Subway Surfer. However, you probably have to be of a certain age. Or you want to recapture some of the thrills from your misspent youth.

Whatever your motivation, there are lots of juvenile antics to get up to, including:

● Grinding subway trains with your homies

● Hoverboard surfing

● Mastering the jetpack that's bizarrely powered by paint

● Various acrobatics

There's a new city to explore every month, so there's always something fresh to keep your interest.

At the time of writing, the game's World Tour had arrived in Tokyo and met Akira, a tough local subway surfer. Straight off, they were exploring the modern streets of the Japanese capital onboard the new signature Sakura hoverboard.

It was then on to grinding trains with a new Japanese friend, Harumi. Rather creepily you are challenged to obtain a cute kawaii cat outfit. Teenage boys will be devoting a lot of time to that endeavor, presumably.

In each city you visit, you hunt down tokens littered along the subway tracks. These tokens get you a variety of Season-specific prizes.

You can also complete new daily challenges to earn event coins, regular coins and keys. In addition, you can splurge on new stuff in the game shop using the new event coins.

Ultimately, Subway Surfers is a game you will love. Or hate with a vengeance. There's no `meh' space here.

It's also likely to prove the type of game that many people download and play for a month or two, then uninstall. Or become completely obsessed. There's only one way to find out.
